ruby is love
November 7th, 2008

I’m in Orlando now for RubyConf. When I am on a trip, I have apparently developed a habit of waking up after only a couple hours sleep and not being able to go back to bed. So, since I’m awake, I figured I’d write a blog post.

The creator of Ruby, Matz, gave a keynote this morning to open the conference. He talked about how love is the driving force behind Ruby. It’s his love of programming languages that drove him to design Ruby and the love of the Ruby community that has kept it going. Other Japanese speakers gave talks, too, and they were very passionate. It’s obvious that they care a great deal for what Ruby has become. It’s hard not to be touched by it.

Having been in the Ruby community for 3 years or so now, I’ve discovered some things about the kind of people who use Ruby. It seems like several of the people who are big names in the community are somewhat insecure. They need to be in the spotlight. Sometimes, they’re also assholes. There are very cool Ruby developers, too, but to be well-known, it seems like you have to be something of an ass. Read the rest of this entry »

rails rumble
October 20th, 2008

This weekend was the rumble. It was 48 hours of coding madness, and it was a blast. We had so much fun. You can find our app here. You’ll need an OpenID account to access it. I recommend ClaimID. Apparently the Flickr and AOL OpenID interfaces don’t work with our app. :( (fixed!)

Considering that we only had 48 hours, a team member who had to bail halfway through due to other plans, a team member or two who might’ve been a bit rusty on Rails and/or git development, and no designer (except for my gimpy designing skills), I think we did a pretty kick-ass job. We were running on as little sleep as we could get away with. A couple of us brought sleeping bags and slept in the office. It was pretty awesome.

I think that our app is probably a little bit above average as far as all the apps people came up with, but there are some AMAZING apps out there, so I’ll be pretty surprised if we place. But man, it was so much fun. At the very least, we have a great start to an application that has a lot of potential to be really cool. If you’re feeling generous, go register to vote at the Rails Rumble website, and vote for us! =)

Everyone on our team took today off work. I caught up on sleep a little bit last night, but I’m still behind. I’m probably going to crash pretty soon, as I’m still exhausted. Read the rest of this entry »

bites
June 27th, 2008

Wednesday night, Stuffy and I tried to go play ping pong, but the building was locked (30 minutes early… Vandy slackers). So we went to the field across from my apartment to throw frisbee instead. I believe that’s where it started.

Wednesday night I woke up at 3am itchy. I figured it was nothing to worry about and fell back asleep eventually. Last night/this morning, I woke up at 3am again. I had bites all over me. Not okay. At all. I got up and took a shower, took my sheets off my bed and tried to sleep on the recliner. That didn’t work so well, and so I just came in to work really, really early instead. I’ve never been that good at sleeping in recliners.

I’m fairly certain it’s not fleas, so I don’t really know what it is. But it will end, immediately. I’m pretty sure I’m not going back to that damn field either.

Someone on my floor tokes up big time every other day or so. It doesn’t bother me; it just makes me chuckle when I come home and smell it. It’s clear they’re not even trying to mask it. Funny. I hope it’s the old lady who lives next to me.

I decided to start writing my own blogging software again for fun. This time, it’s a git-backed merb-based blog. Merb is pretty cool. It’s like Rails, except less opinionated and faster.

vulgartron revisited
May 20th, 2008

Burly sent me a link to the AIM SDK today, which I didn’t know existed. It’s a library for writing AIM bots and clients and whatever. So I downloaded it and poked it a bit.

A year or so ago I wrote a little Ruby AIM bot that insults you when you talk to it. I was re-reading some of the source code today, and it made me lawl. Here are some of the comments I found in the code:

  • authenticate a bitch
  • now we’ve got our shit, connect to the real server, ass
  • now sit here forever like a slut
  • do shit
  • IM some fool
  • ack that shit
second chances
March 6th, 2007

I’ve been programming in .NET for 2 days straight. I miss Ruby. A lot.

Last night we went to the Saucer as usual. It was a night full of awesome quotes, but some of them shouldn’t be repeated in public.

One thing about myself that maybe I’d want to change is the fact that I judge people pretty quickly. I have so much confidence in my ability to read people that I score someone on the “Shallow Scale” within the first five minutes of meeting them. I’m not saying it’s fair at all; it’s just a habit. I probably wouldn’t want to be judged that way, so why do I judge other people? Probably because I hate the way I used to be, putting on a face around people. Naturally, I can’t stand it when I feel like someone isn’t being real with me. Is that the wrong attitude to have? Probably. I should give them the benefit of the doubt and believe that anyone is worth being friends with, even if it takes a little effort.

I used to have to remind myself (and still do occasionally) that I belong in the world as much as anyone else does. That goes both ways. Everyone belongs in the world as much as I do.

My ankle is still bothering me after a month, and it’s starting to make me mad. I think I’m gonna have it looked at.

Back to killing time at work until it’s time to go home.
