Lately I find that every Monday right after work isn’t the best time to go to Flying Saucer. By the time I get there, there’s already like 6 people there. I go from a Monday at work, most of which I spend alone in my cubicle, directly to a rowdy group of folks. It’s kind of a shock. I mean, I get as rowdy as the next guy sometimes, but I need some buffer time.

Sometimes all I really want to do is either go home and unwind or have a drink with only a few friends (as opposed to 8 of them). I don’t like going there when there’s a crap load of people at our table. At least not on a Monday.

Over the weekend I set up a wiki. Go check it out if you get bored.

Monday night was the first time since I’ve moved out on my own that I’ve felt noticeably lonely. And I actually did something about it! I asked Stuffy if I could come over, and I hung out with James, Stuffy, Natalie, and Catherine. I felt better after that.

This week I’ve had a hard time getting back into the flow of work. I did manage to get a git repository set up for all of my dotfiles, but that’s pretty much the most productive thing I’ve done. I’ve been kicking around coupler a little but haven’t really gotten a significant amount of work done there.

I jumped a curb on my bike the other day, and now the back wheel is wobby as hell. So either I bent the wheel frame, or it needs truing. Guess that’ll be my project for this weekend. I also need to get more work clothes pretty badly.

Back to putzing around at work.

The past couple of weeks have been mostly fun. I’ve been playing a good amount of Mario Kart Wii, which is amazing. I also had my yearly work evaluations, and I’m getting promoted! So that’s exciting.

Earlier this week the landlord left a not-so-nice note on our door about how we needed to clean up so he could show the apartment. He called the apartment “a nightmare”, among other things. It was sort of offensive, but I mean, it was a bit messy. So we cleaned up that night frantically, then found out he wouldn’t be showing it for another 5 days because he was so busy. So that was some douche-baggery we had to deal with. For the most part our landlord has been pretty helpful, though, so I’m not really that upset about it anymore.

At least I can start moving out in a week. Hooray!

Sometimes I feel like I hang out with certain people too much. I try to back off sometimes when I get the feeling that they’ve had enough of me. I don’t want to be too clingy or wear out my welcome. Sometimes when I get to see friends that I haven’t seen in a while, I try to cram in as much as possible into the time I have with them. I think the result of that is times that are a bit too stressful than necessary.

I feel like I have to compete with certain people for social space. I want to be understood, and so I want to have my share of time with someone so that we can understand each other. That also makes me a bit more pushy than I’d normally be, at least when certain people are around.

Catherine and I started work on Cowboy’s website. It’ll be a new experience working with a real graphic designer for a change. I’m looking forward to it.

Well, I got my living arrangements settled. I’m not sure how it’ll work out, living alone. Part of me is a little scared, and part of me is excited.

I think about what’s happened while living here a lot. Sometimes I feel angry, sometimes guilty, sometimes shameful. I know that I’m not blameless.

At work I’ve been learning a lot about git, an application for software control management created by Linus Torvalds, the same guy who created Linux. It’s a different way of looking at version control, but it seems pretty cool. I haven’t gotten excited about software like this in a while, probably not since I went to RailsConf last year. Most of the time, I hate software.

I saw Linus’s talk about git yesterday. It’s kinda funny how the big names in open source all share certain qualities. They have strong opinions, and most of the time they’re exceedingly arrogant. I suppose you need people like that to lead software projects, though. They think their way is right, and if you do it another way, you’re “ugly and stupid” (to quote Linus). Granted, Linus’s arrogance is a bit tongue-in-cheek, but generally that’s how all open source programmers are.

I mean, hubris is one of the three great virtues of a programmer. If you’re not arrogant enough to think that your software is awesome, then why write it at all?

Tuesday was my birthday. It was a pretty good one. I did a lot of my favorite things: took a half day from work, threw frisbee in the park, ate chinese with friends, watched anime, and played ultimate frisbee pickup. It was good.

My sister gave me some iTunes credit, and I spent it this morning. I got some Autechre, which was way overdue. Also, iTunes finally got Aphex Twin’s Selected Ambient Works, which I pretty much had to get, since I lost my CD long ago (if I ever had one, I can’t remember). To balance all the techno, I tried something new and got Sylvie Lewis’s latest album, Translations. It’s good so far. She’s a bit Ditty Bops-ish, which is of course how I found out about her. More jazzy, though.

I also discovered that iTunes started adding tax to album sales. That made me a bit sad.

I finally caught up on a bit of queued work yesterday. It’s good to not have a bunch of things begging for my attention for a change.

If I have several tasks on my todo list at work, I almost always go for the most fun of those tasks, regardless of the priority. Today, I have three major tasks on my plate:

Work on a .NET application

Work on a Microsoft Access project

Work on a Ruby on Rails project

Gee… which one will I choose? Gawd. And the winner is…. <blink>3</blink>! /=|_|[|< |\/|1[|20$0/=7.

Sometimes when all of my appointed tasks are stupid (AKA Windows-related), I invent new projects to work on so I don’t have to do them. Yesterday, that project was the fridge app. I added a “Randomize” feature that will erase all word magnets and replace them with words from whatever categories you choose.

So far my vacation has been productive. I got my MythTV system up and running, and I’m very impressed with the software. High kudos to the folks who wrote that program. It works great.

Last night I spilled beer on my laptop. It wasn’t much beer, but it was liquid. I shut off everything immediately and started cleaning it out. I stuck it under a lamp for a while, then left it overnight next to my fan. This morning, using iFixit for a guide, I proceeded to take it apart and make sure things were dried out. I put it back together and hit the power button. All is well. So I got to see the guts of my Macbook, and no harm done, at least as far as I can tell. Maybe the beer made it better.

So this week I’m having some quality me time. Or, trying to. I checked my e-mail this afternoon to find out that I apparently caused a big problem at work. I modified an e-mail notification script, but I introduced a bug into it I guess. This morning 60,000 e-mails were queued up on the server. ITS shut it off. They sorted it out, but I felt bad about causing that.

Anyway, I’m gonna try to not think about work the rest of the week.

Today was a little better. I got some work done on a project I’ve been working on for a couple months now. Got in the zone a bit. It’s always good to feel productive and to put your hands to something you care about.

I went to ultimate tonight. It wasn’t half bad. I didn’t really get yelled at, and I managed to make a few good plays. I don’t like having to “prove myself”, but at least I felt good about my play. Still no new friends made. Everyone on my team seems to already have their cliques formed with people here and there and aren’t too keen on making new friends. Only one or two seem genuinely friendly. Tweaked my ankle a bit I think. The cleats I have aren’t too ankle-friendly.

I found my iPod shuffle, which I had figured got lost during the move. So that’s a plus.

There’s still a lot of turmoil going on inside me. I just have to try to understand it. I had a hard time sleeping last night.
